@Glenny:

Sorry to hear about your troubles. You are right that blogger only stored the reference to your widgets in the template. The actual widget content is stored somewhere else.
When you choose another template, the reference call might not be there in the new template, and when switching back to the old one, it gets lost, as you describe.

1/ When I migrated my Blogger template, I not only backed up my template, but also cut/pasted every single widget into Notepad.
2/ Then I created a temporary blog, with my new template. I manually re-inserted all the widgets in there, and tweaked the look and feel.
3/ Then I went to my actual blog, switched to the new template, and cut/pasted all widgets from my temporary blog.

I know that for you, this might be water under the bridge, as you already lost your old widgets' content.

If it might at all help, do a google search on your blog. Then click on 'cache' which will show an archived view of your blog. If you still see your old widgets, then look at the 'Page Source' in your browser, you will still see the content of your old widgets, and can retrieve some.

Best of luck.. Your story confirms that 'switching a template' in Blogger is not just a 'click-and-go', and people should properly prepare..

This is a brilliant post! Sadly it doesn't help what i was looking for, but it was a good read nontheless. The problem that i have is similar: I've found a new template but when i import it blogger goes crazy (if in the new template something is called widget:html7 and in my old template something had the same name then they clash horribly and the end result is like a slap in the teeth) The funny thing is, even though i backed up my template, when i reloaded it, blogger went even crazier and nothing looked like it did before. Only then did i realise that blogger stores your widgets NOT in the template but in your blogger account. Couldn't they have told us that beforehand? So now i am lost, depressed and need to start saving money because i want someone else to do it for me!
