@MrSmith:

Indeed, for whatever hosting formula, avoid Godaddy.

For other companies, I enjoy VPS hosting, as it gives me complete control over my resources. Shared hosting, not matter how well managed/monitored by the hosting company, will always show occasional lower performance because other users clog it up. So for me and myself, I would not doubt anymore.

BUT BUT, VPS hosting involves much more technical work than shared hosting. You get... well.. a "computer", although with some management software, but still, it is up to you to define how you want to use that computer, make backups, upgrade, etc... Although it can be done if you are not a systems person (I am not really a systems person anymore), but count on spending time on it. In shared hosting, most of the systems troubles/maintenance/mgmt, is taken care for you.

If you do not intend to byte into the technical stuff as of yet, try shared hosting on a reputable hosting company. If the performance does not work out, you can always ask them later to migrate you to a VPS host, a migration service which most do without additional cost.

Feel your pain and appreciate you sharing your experiences. If anything, you now have the satisfaction of warding off any intelligent people from getting trapped by godaddy. :D

So you've hit them where it hurts most ... their pocket book. They never made my shared hosting consideration list. Hostgator, ipage and bluehost have made the cut so far. But now that I've come across this post. Will definitely make a blackmark in my mental book relating to that host forever more.

I'm trying to become an online marketing guru. Which means it's part of my job to anticipate and avoid problems on behalf of clients BEFORE they happen.

This whole shared hosting thing is setting off alarms in my head. Too many unanswered questions roaming around ... ya know ? I'm wondering if I should just avoid the pitfalls and jump straight to VPS hosting.

Would you recommend that for business applications ? I can't afford to find out X, Y, Z, F, G, A, Z, K problems cropping up after the fact. Is sharing hosting just something I should avoid altogether ?

Sighs ... just nature of the beast. Seems nothing is easy online. Spent all this time trying to find good shared hosting options to cut down on costs. Now seems like there could be some serious problems assoc with it in general.

lol ... friggin chinese arithmetic !!!

Anyway, just based on this post ( plus what kind of name is godaddy ? ) ... lol. I'll bad mouth that host whenever the subject comes up in future. Would appreciate some insight on the question I posed from someone with experience.

Should I just avoid shared hosting altogether ?

I just had "the slowdown" on my godaddy economy shared linux hosting, and stumbled onto your page.

After a few days of complaining, the problem mysteriously and suddenly went away(!). I assume but have no way of knowing, that godaddy located and migrated a user (or users) who were on my same shared host that were sucking a lot of cpu and/or datatbase bandwidth.

In the meantime, before the problem healed itself, i was advised by the godaddy csr to migrate to grid hosting -- so i did but now i am stuck in migration limbo. But at least my wordpress blog is functioning okay.

Without notice on and off upgrade servers or migrate to a better (slow server) without technical knowledge. And this guys even bother the client is losing their bussiness...
This is a hidden business strategy for Godaddy to upgrade to a Dedicated Server.. Thats really f**...

I read all your amazing and horrible story, as far the famous hosting companies are concerned I never go with them except domain registration because they never took interest in helping you because they are already big.

I always go with partial small hosting companies with like 3-5 servers with them, they will always love to help you plus they give extra ordinary shared hosting service, and if still your needs are high you can get a vps which can not cost you more then $20 if you take some time to find a reliable and good vps hosting company.

thanks all i can say.

Hi Roy,

For months, I have been looking for a good host. In the end evaluation, I have hostgater.com and vps.net...

Hostgator has the same facilities as GoDaddy, but people are much more happy about the performance, uptime, quality of the support. Slightly more expensive than GoDaddy.

VPS.net is different, they give you a 'naked' virtual dedicated host, in the cloud. There is hardly any interface to install and manage your stuff.
But it is easily scalable, and can be rented even per day.

As a first step, next weekend, I will get together with two friends of mine who are Linux/PHP/SQL system people, and will looking at vps.net for one of my sites which is very CPU intensive (200,000 posts, and intensive indexing, loads of traffic).
If the move goes well, and it performs, I will move my other sites onto that, IF it looks like I would be able to manage the server by myself (I am NOT a systems person)...

If it proves too difficult to manage, I will go with hostgator.

Let me know what you decide, and why, will you? Always interested in hearing feedback in the rapidly changing world of hosting.

One of my blogs (I have 2 on GoDaddy) got hit today, just like yours. It was down for I don't know how long, this morning and then got the Base 64 hack, later in the afternoon. I think I'm going to have to move, now. I can handle being down on this blog, but if my main blog got taken offline for most of the day, it would impact my advertisers. I'm thinking about WP Engine - do you have any new thoughts on hosting, Peter?

Tnx for the feedback, Pierre.
You having to try for 5 times to save a comment illustrates how frustrated I am with the hosting of blogtips...
Will move to a new host when I have a bit of time to migrate the site..
